March Self-Healing Tip

Written by Julie Festa, L.Ac.

The Chinese word for the 5 elements is “wu xing.”  This translates (more or less) into “5 movements,” which is how the seasons are viewed in Chinese medicine – not as things, but as the movement of energy.  March brings the movement of Water into Wood, Winter into Spring.  For our bodies, we experience the power of Water nourishing and infusing Wood.  The energy that Water gives to Wood allows for sprouts to emerge fresh and new from branches, and for new leaves to emerge from the inner growth and energetic storage that occurs during Winter.  We need to honor this within the body by balancing the Water and Wood energies, and assisting in the infusion of Water into Wood.

Self-Acupressure for the transition into Spring -
Liver 8, Qu Quan, Spring at the Bend, is the Water point on the Yin Wood meridian.  Qu Quan treats lower abdominal pain, retention of urine, insomnia, depression, impatience, irritability, and pain in the knee and thigh.  It helps to nourish the Liver, and balance and strengthen the Wood element.  It is an excellent point for knee pain relieving knee pain.

Liver 8 is located along the inside of the knee.  To locate, bend the knee and find where the knee crease ends on the inside of the knee.  Just an inch above this point is Liver 8, in a depression tucked right up next to the bone there.  It should feel tender on palpation.  Massage this point in the evenings and at night before bed on both legs for a few minutes.

July Self-Healing Tips

Written by Julie Festa, L.Ac.

It's July and summer is here big time! We all want to be outside. The daylight hours are long and there's plenty of sun. It's important in the summer months to balance the heat and intensity of the sun with plenty of hydration. One way we do this is to take in more foods that have cooling properties. This does not mean running to the local grocery store for your ice cream. No! Juicy fruits and their juices (and water) really are the best way to balance the body's fluids during the summer time. Summer is the season of the Fire element. The Heart and the Small Intestine are the main players. In Chinese medicine, sweat is considered the fluid of the heart. Therefore we need to ensure that during these hot months when we lose more sweat that we nourish and replenish the fluid element of the heart.

September Self-Healing Tips

By the time you read this you may have seen a leaf or two turn yellow. You may have noticed the weather change, the days getting shorter, the air seeming different. Autumn is here as of September 23 this year. It is time for the bright, warm yang to move inward to our cores to be consolidated and conserved through the coming winter. Fall also brings the harvest, both energetically and physically. All the work we did during spring and summer begins to pay off, and the earth releases her bounty.

February Self-Healing Tips

Written by Julie Festa, L.Ac.

It's February, the middle of winter, and though the Los Angeles skies may be filled with sunshine more days than rain, it is still a good idea to be mindful of the ways of nature. Winter is a time to slow down, be quiet, go inside, and reflect. It is a time to consolidate and nourish yin, to protect the body and to preserve one's warmth. In Chinese medicine, the season of winter is ruled by the element Water. The organ systems associated with the Water element are the Kidney and the Urinary Bladder. In the winter it is important to support the Kidney as it is the root of all energies in the body.

April Self-Healing Tips

Spring is here, and the most important element of good health is to go with the flow.  There are limitless ways of doing this.  With tai chi and yoga practice, we get the body’s chi and blood flowing.  As the chi moves, we relax.  We experience the ease of being in the flow of things.  There is less struggle, frustration, stress and resistance in general.  We can thank the Liver and the healthy flow of Wood energy for this delicious feeling in our lives.  Remember – the most important thing you can do for your Liver is just to relax.  Relax.  Relax…

August Self-Healing Tips

Written by Julie Festa, L.Ac.

In August the earth begins to dry out. It will continue this through the rest of the year. That means, amongst other things, that this month is a time of great shifting. Many people start to get allergies during this time, which represent a need to strengthen the earth element and it’s ability to transform with the seasons. The earth element also represents the ability to connect and bond with the changing environment.

Because the earth begins to dry out now, allergies during this time are often a result of insufficient fluids in the body, and a sign that the body does is not producing enough fluids to sustain through the dry season. In order to prevent or treat these types of allergies, fluids need to be created, supported, and maintained.

Nutritionally, apples are an excellent way to work with allergies in the early dry season. They clear heat that may have been taken on during the summer. In addition, they create body fluids, strengthen the lung, spleen, and stomach, and contain loads of calcium, potassium, iron, niacin, and vitamins a, b, and c.

November Self-Healing Tips

"Invest in Loss"

One of the simplest things we keep learning in our practice at Shakti's is that great physical, spiritual, and mental health comes from staying in the flow of life. Stagnation leads to pain and illness in the body, mind, and spirit. So how do we get our energy to really continue to flow - despite daily stress and difficulty, physical trauma and injury, personal losses and gains? It's a simple thing. We have to let go. Master Zi reminds us time and again to invest in loss.

June Self-Healing Tips

As we move into the beginning of summer, it is time to allow the Heart to unfold. As a reflection of the soft blossoms unraveling into full bloom all around us, it is time for us to sink our consciousness into our Hearts, allowing insight and love to come into full expression. It is a time for luxurious growth, for travel, for work, for play, and for joy. It is also a time to serve others as an aspect of Heart health.
